Currently reading Rocket Boys. After watching a Sunday matinee on TV3 a couple of weeks back. Very inspiring ... Chapter 11 [Rocket Candy]- Page 167: "You designed that ?" I asked. "I did a good portion of it," he answered, glancing down at his drawing. I was confused at this point. "So you're an engineer?" He toyed with a slide rule. "No. An engineer has a degree." I decided to use some of Mr Hartsfield's deductive reasoning. "Jake Mosby's an engineer," I said. "That's right." "You know a lot more about coal mining than he does". "That's true." "Then you're an engineer, right?" Dad shook his head. "Sonny, you have to have a diploma from a college to be an engineer. I don't have one. That means I can never be an engineer." He looked at me speculatively. "But you could".
In the movie the relationship between Hickam and his father looked a bit strain. Maybe there's a couple of cuts from TV3 to fit to the time slot. I dunno. But the books shows a warmer relationship. And Sonny is a lot taller and geekier than the movie character, too.
