Being Fair

This is a no-brainer, maybe. But still, people fall into the trap of being 'fair'.

Sometimes being fair takes a lot of exercises in qualifying things rather than quantifying them.

Take situation I: Mrs A has two sons B and C. B is a college student and stays out of town. So he has to rent a house while he finishes his college stint. C is an upper-secondary school student who is staying with her. In order to be fair, should Mrs A give an exact amount of monthly pocket money (emphasis: quantity) to her boys, or take into account the monthly expenditure(emphasis:quality) of each of her sons.

Take situation II: Ms D has pledge small allowances to cater to her retired parents' requirement. Her father needs to go for a monthly medical check at a private clinic. Her mother does not need to see the doctor regularly, but she takes care of the household groceries. Should she give both of them the same exact amount of money (emphasis:quantity) and tell them - "Mak, Bapak, make sure the amount given last till the 30th of each month". Or, should she itemise (emphasis:quality) every person's requirement/responsibility (father:medical expenditure+pocket money, mother:grocery money+pocket money) and allocate different (but sufficient) amounts to each, so that she fulfills her pledge.

Perhaps we are losing the art of 'listening' to our loved ones needs. That is why we no longer have any conversation. Why talk, when nobody listen.
