Arundhati Roy: The God of Small Things

Aiyyo! Reading Arudhati Roy's first novel prove to be a not so easy task.

She must have won the Booker Prize for some reason.

mysanc tried to ask around on how to understand this book.

When everything seems to fail mysanc turn to amazon.com for some guidance.

Hmm, no wonder. mysanc's been reading the book incorrectly.

One cannot approach this book as a rapid reader. One must go from page to page. Because there are countless storylines spinning out idenfiniteky from this book. Countless relatives and neighbours to keep track of. And they will all collide at the end of the story book. Just like a Hindi Movie- as mentioned by P.Rajan about typical Hindi movie -maybe inspired by Mahabharata which covers just about everything {The Star/10th July 2004/Laksya Movie Review} Achaa!

But there are many beautiful prose and subtle hilarity sprinkled through-out the book. Simplee beautiful and hilarious. Simplee.

[pp1]Dissolute bluebottles hum vacuously in the fruity air. Then they stun themselves against clear windowpanes and die, flatly baffled in the sun.

[pp60] They were made to write In future we will not read backwards. In future we will not read backwards. A hundred times. Forward. A few months later Ms Mitten was killed by a milk van in Hobart, across the road from a cricket oval. To the twins there were hidden justice in the fact that the milk van had been reversing.

[pp117]Margaret told Chacko she couldn't live with him anymore. She told him that she needed her own space. As though Chacko had been using her shelves for his clothes. Which knowing him, he probably had.
